How do I use remote desktop to get to sagan?

You'll probably want to create a shortcut on your desktop, but if you don't have one...from Windows XP if you click on:
Start
  Programs
    Accessories
      Communications
        Remote Desktop Connection

You should see something like:

You'll likely want to change the options when you first use this. Click on "Options>>" to see something like:

Do enter your username and SAGAN for the domain name.
Don't check the "Save my password" box.
(While it's never a good idea, it's also expired and you'll be changing it in a few seconds.)

Select the "Local Resources" tab and you should see something like:

You'll probably want to check "Disk drives" and "Printers" so that you'll have access to them from sagan.

Select the "Experience" tab and you should see something like:

If you are using this from campus, you may want to select the "LAN (10 Mbps or higher)" option. If you are at home or on the road, you may want to select something more appropriate to your connection.

Click "Connect" whenever you're ready.

Enter your password and click "OK"

Click "OK"

Enter a new password twice and click "OK"

Click "OK"

Once you have logged in you will see something like:

What is the Hummingbird Network Neighborhood?

It is something called a "shell extension." While it is useful to Computer Services, by default it shows up on everyone's desktop. While you can't delete a shell extension like you can an icon, you can remove it from your desktop as follows:

Run the tool called TweakUI

Select "Desktop", uncheck the box next to "Hummingbird Neighborhood", click "Apply", then click "OK", and it's gone.

You can find Windows Explorer under "Accessories":

By default, you won't see much when it opens up:

Expanding "My Computer" you'll see something like:

Notice that your local drives are there, but, for example, the C:\ drive on your desktop is not mapped to the V:\ drive on sagan.

Expand "Local Disk (D:)" to see something like:

Shared MS Access databases can be found in their usual place:

Files going to/coming from Banner will be in D:\pushkin vice E:\tolstoy

If you had a "share" on gogol that you mapped as a network drive on your desktop, there should be a share with exactly the same name on sagan.

To map the network drive, right click on "My Network Places", select "Map Network Drive". Use \\sagan.noc.sbc.edu\ for the server followed by the name of your shared folder. You'll want to "Connect using a different user name" and give your username and password for sagan.

What if I want an icon on by desktop to get to sagan?

An easy way to do this is to right click on "Remote Desktop Connection", drag it to your desktop and choose "copy". You can customize that a bit if you like: right click on the icon you just copied and click on "Properties" and you'll see a line called "Target"

at the end of the line add /F (for full screen) and /v:sagan.noc.sbc.edu

Click "Apply" then "OK" and you are done.

How can I map my C:\ drive to the V:\ drive (like I had on gogol)?

You can probably do everything you need to do without this step, but if you must...

On sagan you can open either "My Computer" or "My Network Places"

Then "Map Network Drive" under the "Tools" menu

Sagan recognizes the C:\ drive on your desktop as \\tsclient\c

Assign it to the "V:" drive and click "Finish"
